What to Look For When Buying a Guitar

Buying the best acoustic guitar for beginners can be a difficult and sometimes overwhelming process. But don’t freak out just yet – we promise that after reading this section you’ll be feeling much more chilled about it.

The best advice we can give you is to take your time and shop around before you make your final decision. Spend an afternoon ‘window shopping’, which is a fun way of getting acquainted with the guitars that are for sale in your area.

Try to find a specialist music store where there is a staff member who plays guitar and knows what they are talking about. Another good idea is to go in on a weekday when they’ll have more time to answer your questions.

But don’t let them pressure you – take the time you need to make the best purchasing decision.

What to Look For in a Beginner’s Guitar

A lot of people will tell you that you can learn to play on any guitar, which might technically be true, but you won’t be doing yourself any favors. You will want your first guitar to be easy to tune and easy to play, which is a lot more fun than trying to play an instrument which you find daunting.

Versatility is also a good feature in a beginner’s guitar, because you might not be totally sure about what sort of music you will enjoy playing. For this reason, some people would advise you buy an acoustic guitar, to save yourself the trouble of also buying an amplifier.

There is also a popular belief that acoustics are easier to learn on. There is some truth in that, but you shouldn’t let it stop you from getting an electric guitar if that’s what you really want. Just consider carefully what you want it for and what sort of music you like, and go from there.

If you already own a guitar, it could be useful to read this guide to find out whether or not it is in decent condition. An old guitar which has been kicking around your garage for a while might have some things wrong with it that could make learning difficult.

A good idea if you already have a guitar is to get a friend to look at it, or take it to your local music store for a professional assessment.

Bear in mind also that you don’t necessarily need to buy a brand new guitar, as it is quite possible to get a good deal on a second hand instrument.

Still if you’re not sure what you’re looking for, it is best to get one from a reputable second hand dealer, as opposed to from the internet. It is much better to buy an instrument which you have had the opportunity to hold and play.

Buying the Right Guitar for the Music You Want to Play

As mentioned, you’ll need to decide between acoustic or electric (although there’s nothing stopping you from getting both if you’re feeling particularly enthusiastic)! If you’re looking to buy an acoustic guitar, you’ll need to choose between nylon or steel strings.

Nylon stringed guitars are a little easier on the fingers, but they are best suited to those wanting to play classical or Flamenco guitar music. If you want to play in a band at any time, you’ll be needing a steel-stringed guitar. Again if you’re feeling lost, just ask a friend or a sales assistant at a music store for their advice.

Construction Considerations

The size and weight of a guitar will be the easiest things for you to judge. Steer clear of heavy or overly large guitars as they will be more difficult to play. With acoustic guitars, the more wood used in their construction will adversely affect their volume and tone.

Pick up every guitar that you are considering buying and assess how heavy it is, or if it feels awkward to hold. The lighter the guitar, the better.

Size and weight do not affect the sound so much of an electric guitar, but heavy guitars will make playing tiring. Trust us, your energy will be much better expended by wowing your audience than holding the guitar!

The second thing which will be easy for you to judge is loudness. Generally with acoustic guitars, louder is better as long as it still has a pleasing tone. This can be tested by picking up two or more guitars and playing the same string. If the quality of the sound is the same but one is louder, go for the louder one.

Conclusion

Finally, you should be able to gauge if a second hand guitar is in good condition simply by looking at it. Obviously, those without scuffs, scratches or chips are better because it shows that they’ve been looked after properly.

Although, don’t be fooled by a ‘pretty’ guitar with lots of fancy decorations, as these things might actually detract from the quality of the instrument’s sound.

Therefore, choose a guitar that looks like it’s been cared for and maintained, but don’t get carried away by guitars that are excessively shiny or unnecessarily decorated.

  • It is not necessary to drill holes in the acoustic guitar when you are installing these pickups as this will reduce worth and quality of your acoustic guitar.
  • Instead of drilling holes for volume and tone controls just install pickup and endpin mounted preamp.
  • Saddle Mounted Piezo acoustic guitar pickup is invisible to naked eye and it also offers high feedback resistance.

Dual Pickup Systems:

Each of the pickup described above has its own pros and cons. Thus the acoustic guitar lovers have invented something different to cater with this problem.

Different companies have introduced various dual pickup systems i.e. Fishman Rare Earth Blend. Such dual systems are created by combining two or more basic pickup types. Thus, in this way you can get nearly perfect sound quality by blending two or more than two acoustic guitar pickups.

Acoustic-Guitar and Brands

To get such a combination, may require the buyer to take some time shopping so as to benefit from a product that is worth the value. Unfortunately, these are often very hard to find.

Acoustic Guitar Features

The acoustic guitars have some standard features as follows:

High-quality sound production

These guitars produce good sounds and the player does not have problems with the tone while playing. It should enable a guitarist to play any kind of music with ease.

Not complicated to use and play

A simple guitar is a more preferred instrument, because after all, what the player wants is good sound production and not aesthetics.

As much as it should be good technically, and with enhanced use if electric, this should not really be the main feature. Sound production is still key as well as the ease with which it is played.

Durable

Most owners of guitars are musicians who travel often, and require a good instrument which can be packed without fear of breakages or fading off easily due to environmental changes. Weather changes should not have a major effect on the sound production or physical look of a guitar. This means that the materials used in production should be of very high quality.

Build

Guitars that are considered good are well built and not bulky, the material used should not be so heavy and some of the best materials used on guitars are cedar, spruce, rosewood, mahogany and even oak wood.

Fairly priced

Acoustic guitars offer value for their cost. Even though some of the top instruments are highly priced, it is possible to get the good guitars that are fairly priced and yet produce the same quality sound like the top brands which are usually very expensive.

Appealing

Most of the best guitars are not drab to look at, the colors and materials used to produce them are often appealing and have first Rate Bridge pins made from quality materials.

Branded guitars with names such as Takamine, Gibson, and Martin are considered to be amongst the top. However, some non-branded names such as Washburn D10S and Fender FG730S, which are not so highly priced, have also been found to be quite good by some users. They can last longer as long as they are well maintained.

Takamine Gibson and Martin

Apart from the physical appeal, acoustic guitars can be said to have most of the features outlined above. One of our top choices for a beginner guitarist is the Takamine Jasmine series. This quality guitar can be purchased for under one hundred dollars, and the manufacturer does not sacrifice quality for the price.

This low-cost guitar has exceptional sound quality and is made by the same expert craftsmen with high-quality materials.

If you love music and have always wanted to play the guitar, the acoustic guitar found the Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst to be one of the best guitars for beginners on the market.

I purchased this product 3 months ago and it has definitely caught my attention. I absolutely adore the Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst. I believe this is one of Epiphone’s best selling acoustic guitar for many reasons.

Epiphone DR-100

It has all of the basic elements I could ever ask for in a guitar – it has the traditional shape Mahogany sides and back, Rosewood fingerboard and Select Spruce top.

This is a product that has not let me down. When I received the guitar in the mail (it arrived quickly), I immediately opened it. When I strummed it for the first time, I was satisfied right then and there with the sound coming from it. I knew that this would be the guitar I would play my first real song on.

That night, I started to learn how to play (I learned tabs first). The first song I played was a song called Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down. In about 3 weeks, I was playing my first full song. While I was playing the song (I was showing off) for my friends, they commented on how beautiful the tones sound. I have to agree with them, the tones that come from this guitar are beautiful.

The Price:

The price of this guitar is worth every single penny. At this link, you can purchase the Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst for under one hundred dollars. When it comes to a guitar that has this low price stamped on it, you would expect it to be low quality, but it is anything but low quality. I am definitely satisfied with it.

Body Tonewoods

Have you looked at the top of the DR-100? The top is beautifully made of select spruce. The sides and back are beautifully constructed from mahogany, giving it a warm bass, balanced expression and amazing projection.

The Fingerboard

The fingerboard of the Epiphone DR-10 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst is made of Rosewood. Being that the fingerboard is made of Rosewood, it is durable and this makes it stable and balanced, which gives each note clarity.

The Angled Headstock

Unlike with the cheaper designs, Epiphone’s have a 14-degree headstock. This 14-degree headstock will give the nut more pressure, so you do not have to tune it so much.

I highly recommend the Epiphone DR-100 Acoustic Guitar, Vintage Sunburst to any individual that is starting to learn how to play the guitar.

6. Jasmine By Takamine S34C NEX Acoustic Guitar

From the moment I first took the Jasmine By Takamine S34C NEX Acoustic Guitar out of its box, I knew that it would be the right one for me. I was just starting to learn how to play the guitar and my friend pointed me toward this one. He told me that he purchased one for his son who was on his way to college to become a music teacher.

Takamine S34C NEX

The Sound

When I first strummed the strings on the guitar, I could not believe the sound that came from it. Even though I did not know how to play at the time, the sound was like music to my ears.

I did not like the strings on it, because they were too heavy, but after 2 months, I replaced the original strings that came with my guitar (because I can be picky) and the sound was even better. The balance to the tone beautifully supports vocals.

The Design

The design is amazing. Jasmine guitars are naturally designed by takamine. The full-line consists of dreadnoughts, mini jumbos, cutaways, 12-strings and acoustic/electrics. All of the guitars have popular features that will fit today’s player.

Each one of the models feature popular finishes, all-wood construction, quality, and durability. The fingerboards are fully bound rosewood, which feels great to the touch. Regardless, this guitar came to me at a price that could not be beat.

The Price

I admit, when I first started playing, I did not have a whole lot of money to spare, but I really wanted to learn how to play the guitar. With those thoughts in my mind, I did a great deal of research and when I was talking about it with my friend, he showed me a website where the Jasmine By Takamine S34C NEX acoustic guitar was posted.

The price on this guitar is what really caught my eye, plus I heard that it was a high quality guitar. I didn’t expect for the guitar to be this good.

Features:

  • Nato back and sides
  • Spruce top
  • Natural finish
  • Rosewood fingerboard

I noticed that it has a pick guard and the pick guard is not shown in the photo on their website or in a catalog I look through. However, this is not a complaint, it is more of a surprise and I am definitely pleased to have that pick guard.

I have read some complaints about Takamine and Jasmine being printed on the pick guard. While this is correct, it is easy to remove the words. I removed them by peeling the protective sticker off (it’s easy), then you will have a pick guard that does not contain any words.

From here on out, I am a Takamine fan. The Jasmine by Takamine S34C NEX acoustic guitar has officially won my heart.

Additional Info

While I am very satisfied with the guitar, I did have one complaint. I did not like the strings. However, for me, this is no biggies – I simply fixed my problem by fixing the guitar strings (I replace them on a regular basis).

I replaced the original strings with Martins – they stay in tune, even after I do my bending. Apart from the Martins, I would also recommend the D’Addarios. The guitar plays beautiful, rich sound.

The Frets

The frets are really great. I noticed some other reviewers on the Internet mention the good quality of the frets. While bending, these frets do not squeak, unlike with the other guitar I have.

Ease of Use

When I first took the guitar out of the box, the action was a bit too high for my liking. That’s okay, because I took a trip to the local music shop (I have some friends there) and had them adjust the action for me. Having the action adjusted helped and it is much better.

If you purchase the Squier® SA-100 Pack Acoustic Guitar Pack and find it hard to get the basic chords to sound great, then I recommend you taking ti down to the local music shop and having the action adjusted – this will help you.

Quality

Believe it or not, this is a durable guitar. My kids play on this guitar and there is no damage to it. If it survived my kids, then I am pretty sure that is a good sign.

I used the Squier® SA-100 Pack Acoustic Guitar Pack to learn how to play the guitar. I have since upgraded to a more expensive ($2,000.00) guitar, but my kids are now using the Squier to learn how to play (just like their dad did).

Would I purchase this guitar again? Of course I would – it helped me start my music career and it is now helping my kids start their music career. I would recommend this guitar to every individual who would like to start playing the guitar
